You Can’t Think Beyond the Energy Your Organism Can Supply

Why the energy to perceive is so crucial.

What could be more important to understand than biological energy? Thought, growth, movement, every philosophical and practical issue involves the nature of biological energy.

Imagine trying to solve a difficult philosophical problem. Now imagine trying to solve exactly the same problem after three nights without sleep, living on coffee and adrenaline, worrying about money, and rushing between meetings.

The problem hasn’t changed. You have. Your intelligence hasn’t disappeared. Your education hasn’t vanished. Your values haven’t been erased. Yet the world itself somehow looks different. The same conversation feels more threatening. The same uncertainty feels less tolerable. The same decision seems more urgent. Possibilities that felt obvious yesterday seem to disappear altogether.

We usually treat this as psychology. Ray Peat thought it began somewhere deeper: with energy.

Energy isn’t what you think it is

Most of us think of energy as something we have. Enough to get through the day, exercise, or stay awake. But Peat meant something much more fundamental. For him, energy wasn’t simply fuel for activity but the condition that allows a living organism to remain organised, responsive, and capable of meeting reality.

Everything else follows from that. Thought. Emotion. Perception. Creativity. Learning. Even freedom. Not because metabolism determines what you think, but because it helps determine what you’re capable of perceiving.

Life is an activity, not a thing

One of Peat’s most consistent themes was that living organisms aren’t machines assembled from independent parts. They’re self-organising systems that continually maintain themselves against the tendency towards disorder.

Life isn’t a thing. It’s an activity. Every heartbeat, thought, memory, act of repair, and moment of attention depends upon the organism successfully producing and distributing energy. That sounds almost too obvious to mention, until you realise how often we ignore it.

When energetic problems get treated as moral ones

Modern life has become remarkably good at treating energetic problems as moral ones. You’re exhausted? Become more disciplined. You’re struggling to concentrate? Improve your mindset. You’re anxious? Build resilience. You’re losing motivation? Find your purpose.

Sometimes those things genuinely help. But they quietly assume that the organism already possesses the energetic capacity required to do them. Peat asked a more uncomfortable question. What if the problem isn’t insufficient determination? What if the organism is simply running out of available energy?

Activation isn’t energy

This is one reason we so often confuse activation with energy. A person running on adrenaline can appear enormously energetic. They work longer hours. Reply to emails faster. Exercise harder. Speak with urgency. Become intensely productive. Until they stop.

Stress is a remarkable way of getting tomorrow’s energy today.

The bill simply arrives later. Peat repeatedly argued that stress hormones are adaptive. They keep us alive when circumstances demand more than our ordinary metabolism can comfortably provide. The problem comes when emergency physiology quietly becomes everyday physiology. Eventually the organism begins surviving on compensation rather than abundance.

The same content, a different organism

That distinction changes the way we think about almost everything. Take learning. We often assume education is mainly about information. Read another book. Listen to another podcast. Attend another course. Develop another skill. But every teacher has seen the same phenomenon. The student who arrives well-rested, curious, and engaged doesn’t simply remember more information. They perceive more.

Connections appear that were previously invisible. Questions become richer. Learning becomes enjoyable rather than effortful.

The same content enters a different organism. The result is a different education.

The same thing happens in leadership. Leaders are often encouraged to become more reflective. More patient. Better listeners. More capable of holding ambiguity. These are admirable aspirations. But they also demand energetic capacity.

It’s much easier to tolerate uncertainty when your organism isn’t already treating uncertainty as danger. It’s much easier to remain curious when you aren’t fighting to remain functional. And it’s much easier to think systemically when your physiology isn’t continually narrowing your attention towards immediate survival.

Perhaps this is why organisations so often become less intelligent under pressure. Not because people suddenly become less capable, but because the conditions no longer support the kind of perception the situation now requires.

Conditions, not prescriptions

This is where Peat’s work reaches beyond nutrition. He was never simply asking which foods people should eat, but what sort of conditions allow an organism to remain expansive rather than defensive. Warmth instead of chronic stress. Nourishment instead of continual emergency. Curiosity instead of fear. Growth instead of compensation.

Whether or not you agree with every physiological claim he made, that broader question deserves far more attention than it usually receives.

Lazy, or depleted?

It also changes how we think about ourselves. Many people spend years believing they’re lazy, or unmotivated, or lacking discipline. Sometimes they’re right. Sometimes they’re describing what it feels like to inhabit an organism that’s been asked to do more than it can presently support. Those aren’t the same thing.

Likewise, many high performers proudly describe themselves as energetic. Yet remove deadlines, competition, urgency, and external pressure, and they struggle to begin. Their productivity was real. But it depended upon mobilisation rather than abundant capacity. Again, those aren’t the same thing.

The energetic life of an organisation

The implications reach beyond individuals. Every organisation has an energetic life. Some meetings leave people more alive than when they entered. Others consume attention without producing clarity. Some cultures steadily increase people’s capacity to think, collaborate, and create. Others require extraordinary effort just to stay operational.

You can see it in the faces people carry home. The question isn’t simply whether an organisation performs, but whether it generates more human capability than it consumes. That feels like a much deeper measure of success.

Where the philosophers converge

One of the things we admire most about Peat is that he refused to separate biology from philosophy. The organism was never merely a body carrying a mind. The body was already thinking, perceiving, and deciding which possibilities the mind would even notice. That doesn’t make philosophy less important. It makes it more embodied.

You can’t separate wisdom from the living conditions that make wisdom possible.

Perhaps this is why so many of the philosophers we cover in our programmes quietly converge. Heraclitus understood that life persists through continual becoming. Aristotle thought living beings realise their potential through activity. Heidegger believed our understanding always begins in our way of being-in-the-world. Mae-Wan Ho described organisms as maintaining maximum global cohesion with maximum local freedom.

Peat reminds us that none of this happens independently of metabolism. Perception itself has energetic conditions. That may be his deepest contribution.

Before asking someone to think differently, become more resilient, or lead with greater wisdom, perhaps we should first ask a much simpler question: does their organism currently possess the energy required to do what we’re asking?

Because you can’t continually ask an exhausted organism for expansive thought. And you can’t build wise organisations by repeatedly exhausting the people expected to exercise wisdom.
