Nietzsche’s hourglass

For a life you’d live again.

1882 · The Gay Science, §341

Where it comes from

In The Gay Science (1882) Nietzsche imagines a demon telling you that you’ll live this exact life again, “innumerable times more”: “The eternal hourglass of existence is turned upside down again and again.” Would you curse him, or thank him?

How to play it

Turn it over and watch the day run. Then answer the demon.

Pick it up

What it teaches (try it first)

Nietzsche wasn’t predicting physics. He was setting a test: live so that you’d want this exact life again.

Ask yourself. What are you doing this week that you wouldn’t choose to live forever?
