Lao Tzu’s pot

For making room.

c.400 BC · Tao Te Ching, chapter 11

Where it comes from

Lao Tzu noticed that we shape clay into a pot, but it’s the empty space inside that makes it useful. The same goes for the hole at the hub of a wheel, and the space inside a room.

How to play it

Shape the clay on the wheel. Then fill it.

Pick it up

What it teaches (try it first)

Leaders tend to fill every space: the diary, the silence after a question, the gap in a plan. The empty part is often what makes the rest useful.

Ask yourself. Where have you left room for something you didn’t plan?
