Kant’s dove

For anyone tired of resistance.

1781 · Critique of Pure Reason

Where it comes from

Kant imagined a dove that feels the air resisting her wings and thinks she’d fly much more easily in empty space. But the air she pushes against is the very thing holding her up.

How to play it

Pump the air out of the jar. Then let it back in.

Pick it up

What it teaches (try it first)

The resistance you’d like to be rid of is often what holds you up: the sceptical colleague, the budget, the board that asks awkward questions.

Ask yourself. Which constraint are you trying to remove that’s actually keeping you in the air?
