The experience machine

For success, without the bother.

1974 · Anarchy, State, and Utopia

Where it comes from

In Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974) Robert Nozick imagines a machine that gives you any experience you want, writing a great novel or making a friend, while you float in a tank. “Should you plug into this machine for life?” He bet most of us wouldn’t: we want to do things, not just feel them.

How to play it

Choose your lives and climb in. Keep an eye on the door.

Pick it up

What it teaches (try it first)

If feeling good were all that mattered, you’d plug in. Most people won’t: we want to actually do things, not just have the experience of them.

Ask yourself. Are you arranging your life to feel successful, or to take part in something you care about?
